Saved From Wrath

I will not execute my burning anger; I will not again destroy Ephraim; for I am God and not a man, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come in wrath. (Hosea 11:9)

Israel had sinned greatly. Ephraim deserves to be punished for such long periods of time. But the Lord refrained His hand. He withheld His anger. He showed mercy instead of justice when He chose to not come to them in wrath.

How the Lord meets us with such compassion every time we sin! We too have been transgressing His law, have been desecrating His name. Yet the Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. How He withholds what is rightful for us, and gives us grace that we do not deserve. He chose to save us from our own sins, to turn His just wrath away from us. Simply because He is gracious.

How marvelous art Thou, Lord! How majestic Your name! I cannot begin to fathom how a God not needing anyone would go down and save people from their own mess. I can only cry thankful tears for such wondrous, undeserved deed. Thank you for being who You are, Lord. Thank you for being compassionate and merciful and gracious. And may my entire life live up to this feeling of gratitude.
