Steadfast Heart As Sacrifice

For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. (Hosea 6:6)

Israel at this time had been keeping up a facade of religiosity while practicing idolatry. They kept the pretense of sacrifice and offerings, all the while worshiping Baal too. They kept the form, but had forsaken the substance. They had no love for God–they wanted only to play safe. To be in the grey area where they can do what they want and still incur no consequences from the Law of the Lord.

God does not seek burnt offerings. Or tithes and donations, for that matter. He requires a heart that is completely true to Him, a heart that seeks Him wholly. He desires steadfast love from His people, not pretense and sacrifice. He wants you to be faithful. And He wants you to know more about Him, to seek Him earnestly and faithfully. To read more of His revealed will every day, and to obey His voice more. He desires that you knew more about Him than your best offerings, than your best efforts of sending up smokes of aroma to Him. Let us, therefore, “press on to know the Lord.”

Give me a heart that fully worships you, Lord. Give me a heart that contains love only for You. Give me a heart that is most faithful. A heart that desires only to know You more each day, and to follow Your precepts day and night. Give me that heart, Lord. Let my eyes be fixed ever upon You and You alone. Let my heart seek You and You alone.
